1 Home Before Dark – Riley Sager   Release Date: June 30th

I’ve read both Final Girls and The Last Time I Lied and, I hope Sager takes this as a compliment, they are peak guilty pleasure to me. I devoured both of them so quickly and that’s something I really need in my life right now.

2 Utopia Avenue – David Mitchell,  Release Date: July 14th

It’s been almost eight years since I read Cloud Atlas and I remember how much I loved it. Slade House was also enjoyable but the ending left me wanting more. The only concern is that the subject matter isn’t something I immediately connect to, but because of the author I’m willing to give it a try.

3 Axiom’s End – Lindsay Ellis,  Release Date: July 21st

I’ve watched Ellis’ videos about film theory on Youtube for years now. I could write a whole post about Youtube film criticism, but trust me when I say that Ellis is one of the best out there. Usually when my favorite celebs announce ‘I’m writing a book!’, I get really nervous because the odds are stacked against them.

I’m positive and eager however, because even though Ellis has a following, she’s not a celebrity surrounded by ‘Yes Men’. Ellis released a video explaining the whole long process and the years it took to get someone to publish her book. I’m also extremely excited because the book is Sci-fi!! I feel like when a publisher wants to make a quick buck off of someone’s notoriety it’s usually a memoir. 

(**I love a great memoir, but I think we all know the difference in quality when it’s a celebrity puff piece.**)

4 Tender is the Flesh – Agustina Bazterrica,  Release Date: August 4th

This is an English translation of an Argentinian novel that came out three years ago. This one will not be for everyone. The book is about the near future where all animal meat has become poisonous to humans and leads to cannibalism being legalized. The novel follows Marcos, who works in a slaughterhouse and a new dilemma that makes his difficult job even harder. 

I love horror, but this is a subject matter I usually avoid. The more I read about the book the more I’m interested though. This is a rare book that I’m ready to dive into even with the knowledge that there’s a strong possibility I could DNF it.

5 Transcendent Kingdom – Yaa Gyasi,  Release Date: Sept. 8th

For those of you who haven’t read Homegoing yet, I highly recommend the generational historical fiction book that follows two families over 200 years. I’ve been waiting for Gyasi’s second book since then, and though this leans more literary fiction than historical, I’m still really excited. 

Transcendent Kingdom follows a family of Ghanain immigrants who reside in Alabama. The daughter, on her way to becoming a medical researcher, struggles with science and the faith she grew up in.

6 The Devil and the Dark Water – Stuart Turton,  Release Date: Oct. 6th 

Turton’s last book, The Seven (and a Half) Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, was one of those books that came out to massive praise, and soon after a wave of ‘it wasn’t that good‘ followed. Personally, I really enjoyed my experience reading the book, especially for the length, but to each their own. And this new book is set in the 1600’s on the high seas and might have demons… so yeah, I’m on board.
