I can’t believe it’s time for another TBR! My summer list went off a cliff so I’m pretty positive that I’ll do just fine for autumn. What are you excited to read in the next couple of months?
1 The Caretaker of Lorne Field – Dave Zeltserman
Interesting enough, when this post ‘goes live’ I’ll have just started this book. Hope future me is having a good time! This book seems like a spooky good time with plant monsters. Sure, why not?
2 Dune – Frank Herbert
I think this has been on all my TBRs in 2020. Mark my word! I will read Dune before the Winter TBR is out!! Also the trailer for the movie has got me pumped.
3 The Goblin Emperor – Katherine Addison
I actually started this book earlier in the summer but it just wasn’t time for a book with complicated names. What I did read I really enjoyed. I’m glad I feel up to the challenge to start again, as I’m pretty sure I’ll need a book about a great leader come November.
4 Going Clear – Lawrence Wright
This is probably tipping my hand on my plans for Nonfiction November, but this is the first of three books on my TBR that deals with famous American cults/radical faiths. Going Clear focuses on Scientology, the craze that hit Hollywood pretty hard, and over the last decade we’re really starting to see what’s going on behind the scene.
5 A Head Full of Ghosts – Paul Tremblay
Tremblay seems to be a big name in horror of late but I haven’t read any of his books… yet! The story is about a young woman with acute schizophrenia and told fifteen years after the fact by her younger sister. I definitely get The Exorcist vibes as the family turns to a priest for help.
6 Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders – Vincent Bugliosi
Charles Mason is one of those odd characters in history that you’ve heard enough about that you think you know the story, but you don’t. Between Mindhunter and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.. Manson has been on the mind so I wanted to do some more research. I know of late some have discredited some Helter Skelter theories, but I thought best to start here.
7 The Hobbit – J.R.R. Tolkien
I love the Lord of the Rings movies so much but for some reason never got around to reading the series or its prequel, The Hobbit. I actually saw an animated version of The Hobbit as a kid and didn’t realize that the two were connected till after I saw The Fellowship of the Ring. Think I should finally give it a whirl.
8 The Road to Jonestown – Jeff Guinn
I actually know next to nothing about what happened at Jonestown, just that the ‘don’t drink the kool-aid’ phrase originated from this horrible event. As I did some basic research it looks like I needed a more in-depth look and this nonfiction book comes highly recommended.
9 Swordheart – T. Kingfisher
For fantasy I’m really into a ‘going on an unexpected adventure’ mood. I especially need some good-hearted heros. I don’t mind my protagonists being awful in horror books, but for fantasy I just really want to root for someone. Now more than ever. Swordheart seems to have this plus a dash of romance, so I’m all in.
10 The Witches – Roald Dahl
I’m a part of a generation of children who were scared shitless by the movie version of The Witches. Even the beginning sequence, before we even get to the witches, chilled me to the core. This is actually my classics choice for the month of October and I plan to read it for Banned Books week!

Read Dune and the other two books years ago. The 1984 movie was horrible, the mini-series was okay. The CG on the new one looks tremendous. https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2020/09/todays-topic-is-my-fall-tbr-list.html

A Head Full of Ghosts and The Goblin Emperor look great – and I know what you mean about needing to be in the name for long fantasy names! This is my list of ten of Autumn’s TBR pile!

I cannot believe you haven’t read LOTR. Then again, I haven’t read not one Harry Potter book and everyone gives me side eyes about it. I hope you enjoy The Hobbit. Happy reading! Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday post.

Yeah, I guess I kept waiting for ‘the right mood’ but I think I just need to dive in. It’s always going to be intimidating.

Good luck with Dune! I will admit that the size of that one makes me quake in my boots a little 😂

Yep! I promise my husband that I would read it before the movie came out, so I’m going to have to just dive in soon.

I have read The Hobbit. It is a great book! I hope you like it. But I will give this warning. It is different from the movies. The female Elf is not in the book. Peter Jackson just added her for the movies. Great list!
Here is TTT.

Oh, I know they stuff a lot in those movies to make it three. Just one of the many things that went wrong…

Going Clear and Dune have been on my TBR pile for ages … maybe this will be the year I finally get to them, too! Funny, I only read The Hobbit for the first time this year as well. It’s never too late to read a classic, right?

Yeah, Dune and The Hobbit have been on mine for awhile too. Tried to at least knock off a couple long time ones a year!

Brilliant review! I first heard of Dune through the 2021 movie ( I couldn’t watch the film without reading the book!) and I’m so glad I did. I think I had a similar experience to you, I enjoyed it even if it was a little longer than I normally read. The world of dune was so rich and the political tapestry was so vibrant. Here’s my review 🙂 https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2020/11/23/read-dune-soon-a-book-review/
