February Wrap-Up: Gothic Hauntings & Rebecca

This was a month that had its ups, downs, and in-betweens for sure. I loved The Haunting of Hill House so much and it was one reread that not only held up but surpassed my previous experience. Slade House and The Woman in Black had their flaws but were still enjoyable reads. And then there was Hell House. I already said a lot about Hell House and it’s all in my review here.

Now for Rebecca

This was going to be the month that I finally read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, a book that has been on my shelves for years. For one reason or another it just kept getting pushed back. I did try and read roughly fifty pages before deciding that I have to leave this one behind.

This has nothing to do with the quality of the book, du Maurier is an exquisite writer.  I have seen the movie Rebecca, so I thought I would be able to handle the central relationship of the book, between Mr. Maxim de Winter and his second wife, our unnamed protagonist, but it’s one thing to watch and another to be in the second Mrs. de Winter’s head.

There’s a twenty year difference between Maxim and his new wife, with our unnamed protagonist is in her early 20’s. Now, it wasn’t the massive age difference that made me put Rebecca down, or I wouldn’t be able to read any classics, but the power dynamics within their relationship and how Maxim spoke to her. When I was 19 I was in a similar relationship, and Rebecca just brought me all the way back to a place that I had moved away from and, honestly, didn’t want to go back to.

There’s times when you challenge yourself or ‘push through’ and times when you know mentally what might not be the best for you. This was a time to step away. Maybe in another decade I’ll be able to read Rebecca, but for now I’ll just have to be content with the movie version.

Due to personal reasons, I need to take the month of March off from blogging. The next subject I want to dive into is going to take more research and I want to make sure I do my due diligence. I hope everybody has a lovely March (Spring!) and I’ll see you on the flip side.

  1. I’m sorry that it was bringing back negative memories for you. I am glad though that you were able to realize that it just isn’t the right time for you to read it but still plan to in the future when you can handle it
